International Women’s Day in Eritrea:
International Women’s day is observed around the World on March 8th and is highly regarded and celebrated in Eritrea. While the society may still have a patriarchal hold, this day is one dedicated to our mothers, sisters, aunts, grandmothers etc. who work so hard and are often times not praised for it. It’s a day of celebration of the achievements of Eritrean women. Most notably, Eritrean women made up 30% of the Eritrean Military Forces (EPLF) during the height of the Eritrean War for Independence from Ethiopia. Women who did not fight lost sons, husbands, brothers, fathers etc. They had the task of keeping themselves and their own families afloat if/when tragedy struck. With 9 Ethnic Groups, Eritrean women look very different from ethnic group to ethnic group but one common element Eritrean Women share in history is resilience. And their strength and resilience came hand in hand during the toughest times in our history.
